Calcite

These animation shows the monthly difference in calcite saturation state (Ωcal) between two reference periods: 2030-2035 and 2050-2054 averages. The outputs are based on simulations from a regional biogeochemical ocean model for the Atlantic Canada region, forced with atmospheric outputs from three global climate models (CanESM2, MPI, and HadGEM2) under the RCP 8.5 emissions scenario. Each frame represents a single month of the year. Calcite saturation state is an indicator of carbonate chemistry conditions relevant to calcite-forming organisms. Decreases in Ωcal suggest increasing ocean acidification and reduced conditions for calcification.
