Chlorophyll

These animations show the monthly difference in surface chlorophyll-a concentrations between two reference periods: 2030-2035 and 2050-2054 averages. The outputs are based on simulations from a regional biogeochemical ocean model for the Atlantic Canada region, forced with atmospheric outputs from three global climate models (CanESM2, MPI, and HadGEM2) under the RCP 8.5 emissions scenario. Each frame represents a single month of the year. Chlorophyll-a is a proxy for phytoplankton biomass and primary production, with higher values indicating increased phytoplankton abundance. Positive values indicate higher chlorophyll-a concentrations in the later period, while negative values indicate a decrease relative to the earlier period.
