Developed in partnership with Nova Scotia’s Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture, CMAR has developed free, publicly accessible, bilingual educational resources for K-12 students and educators. The program is designed to increase awareness of the socio-economic importance of the province’s fisheries and aquaculture sectors while showcasing the diverse career opportunities they offer.
The Coast to Classroom program houses 26 bilingual lesson plans supported by classroom-ready resources, virtual tours of aquaculture facilities, learning kits for educators to do in-person demonstrations, and an ambassador program that connects students with professionals from industry, government, industry associations, and more to talk with their students about working in the marine and aquaculture sectors. These resources are plug-and-play, meaning they include lesson plans, all the resources required to deliver the lesson plan, curricular outcomes delivered by the lesson, plus ready to assess activities.
By introducing students to the people, science, innovation, and sustainable practices behind Nova Scotia’s provincial fisheries and aquaculture industries, we foster ocean literacy, environmental stewardship, and appreciation for the vital role these sectors play in coastal communities.
